The popularity of boat based whale watching has exploded around the world in the last fifteen years. Thousands of people are traveling and vacationing with the hope of seeing whales as their primary goal. Blame it on “Free Willy” or our curious human nature, but whales and people have been interacting a lot more lately. Is this good? Do both species gain from this interaction? Before “Free Willy” there was one whale watching business in the San Juan Islands of Washington State. A few years after the movie was released I counted over fifty boats one very busy summer day all watching the Orca whales. It was disheartening to see that many boats ( of all shapes and sizes) hovering around these fantastic creatures. Well…a lot has changed since then and I think it is all for the best. Today there are a lot less whale watching boats in the San Juan Islands. The Pacific Northwest Whale Watch Operators Association was established and it established whale watching guidelines for its members and they have now been adopted by the state of Washington.

Now is probably a good time to let you know a bit about myself and why I wanted to write this article. First, I am no scientist (although I have spoken many times with Ken Balcomb, a scientist who has studied the Orca Whales in the Pacific Northwest for over forty years). I have no PHD in higher education, no government grants, etc. I am simply a person who has lived and boated around the Orca Whales for the last twenty-fives years in the San Juan Island Archipelago of Washington State.

I am a member of the Pacific Northwest Whale Watch Operators Association and I have been driving small boat whale watching tours out of Friday Harbor for four years. My thoughts after hundreds of encounters with these incredible mammals is that boats don’t bother them. They certainly don’t flee from boats, as a matter of fact (so often that I’m sure it is intentional) they will swim out of their way to come near boats, or wait until they are close to whale watching boats and then breach ( jump out of the water) right next to them, putting on a show as everybody screams in delight. I am convinced that these highly intelligent mammals enjoy interacting with us at times. I often think about the fact that if the Orca Whales in marine parks around the world didn’t enjoy performing for people, you’d never see one jump on command.

This growing relationship between people and whales is probably the best hope there is to stopping commercial whaling around the world. As more and more people see these incredible, beautiful, highly intelligent and family orientated mammals, pressure will grow to stop the slaughter of these creatures. The more whale watch operators can show the public the grace and beauty of these animals the more public outcry there will be against harming or killing them. It is now illegal to capture whales in Washington state, but once not to long ago Orca whales were captured, and sold to marine parks ( some animals died while trying to be captured) around the world. It was public outrage that made the law change. If this can happen here in Washington it can happen around the world.

So is this new interest in whale watching educational or exploitation for profit? I think neither is the right words. I prefer to think of this more as a “marriage”. The more we learn about whales the more we will care about them, and the more we care about them the more we will strive to protect them. My hope is that this “marriage” will benefit not just the whales, but all life on this planet.
